Digital Media

 


This week, I have been studying digital media and its power to enhance teaching pedagogy. Digital media comes in various formats such as image, audio and video (Marryville, 2021). Each type of media has a diverse characteristic that when implemented can enhance learning and cater for the more diverse learners in your classrooms (Relojo-Howell, 2020).

Students from this generation have been using digital technologies and digital media platforms since an early age resulting in tech savvy individuals (Molla, 2019). Because of this, it is important to use their strengths in technology to your advantage as a teacher and implement digital learning into your classrooms.

Here are some simple ways I can use digital media as a HPE teacher:

By using imagery, students can get a visual representation of the skill before being bombarded with the many written steps required to perform the specific skill with correct technique.

I would go that next step forward by incorporating audio learning and linking the topic with video learning. For this example, I would incorporate an introduction of the skill, rules and techniques on how to throw a javelin.

By watching a video the students get a representation of the skill and how the skill is performed practically. Students also have the ability to take down key notes and gain confidence in technique before jumping straight into throwing a javelin. 

After the videos are complete, the teacher can question students on what they have just learnt and what key notes are there. This will promote effective questioning that links in with the learning intention of the specific task. 

You can link in digital learning to enhance your practicals lessons, for example instead of just having your students throw a javelin and simply retrieving it. You can have your students: (not limited).

·        -  Record their distances to create graphs/calculate averages on Microsoft Excel.

·        -  Record videos to show technique/form/best throws.

·        -  Take photos for progressions for portfolios.

·        -  The students can do voice recordings over tutorials on technique.

All tasks can create student and class collaboration. This powered with the use of digital tools makes the learning more enjoyable and more engaging hence enhancing student learning (Relojo-Howell, 2020)

  1. Hi Justin,

    Great blog! You have really improved from your last couple of blogs. The direct relation to your teaching areas is great and shows you really understand the content and value of digital media in your teaching. The introduction does a great job of explaining why digital media is important in modern teaching and nice use of references.
    I would have liked to have seen a section that used the SAMR model to explore the value of digital in teaching and its role in the model, however I feel that you have explored this topic throughout the article in your PE teaching.

    Your blog this week showed improvement from your previous blogs as you have taken on other students' feedback and have included pictures and videos to improve your work. It was great to see that you have explored ways that your could use images within the classroom to improve student learning. Next time make sure you cover the ethical, legal and safe protocols that students need to remember when using digital media. It would also be worthwhile to double check your references before publishing.
